# Roshan Taneja > Third-year EECS student at UC Berkeley working on geospatial machine learning — using satellite data to answer questions about water, across two hemispheres. Roshan Taneja is a third-year Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences student at UC Berkeley. The research splits across two hemispheres: Sentinel-2 imagery over the Maasai regions of Northern Tanzania, where dwelling-detection models guide the placement of rainwater harvesting units; and ICESat-2 photon-counting altimetry over the polar oceans, where a Kalman-filter pipeline forecasts the drift of calved icebergs in the Labrador Sea. The Tanzania work won the NeurIPS 2024 Machine Learning for Social Impact high-school track (1 of 4 winners, presented in Vancouver), produced a pending US patent (63/703,232, "Object Detection in Satellite Imagery for Optimising Rainwater Unit Placement"), and was presented as the sole high-school keynote at ML4EO 2024 at the University of Exeter, UK. Two papers were published in the National High School Journal of Science (Oct 2024 and Dec 2024). The research grew out of five years of humanitarian work with the Maasai community: roughly $300K raised and ~550 rainwater harvesting units deployed, cutting daily water collection time from about 9 hours to under 2 for 30,000 people. Outside research: contributing member of Cal STAR's avionics subteam on the Diablo liquid-bipropellant static-fire ground control stack, hardware builder (Bench-1, an ESP32-S3 telemetry tag with LoRa downlink), competitive programmer, and writer of poetry, short fiction, and essays. Primary languages: Python for ML and data, JavaScript/TypeScript for web, C for embedded, some Java for competitive programming. Not currently taking freelance or consulting work; open to research collaborations via GitHub or LinkedIn. This site (roshan.codes) is a Next.js 14 app deployed on Vercel; source is public. ## Research - [Tanzania — Rainwater for the Maasai](https://roshan.codes/tanzania): Year-by-year timeline of the rainwater harvesting deployment in Northern Tanzania, 2020–2024 — fundraising rounds, field visits, unit deployments, and awards.
